Senior Management

James I. Garrels, PhD
Chief Executive Officer
Prior to Garbrook, Dr. Garrels was a founder and CEO of Proteome, Inc., a successful knowledge company that provided comprehensive annotation for newly sequenced genomes, including the human genome. Proteome was a leader and innovator in the field of scientific curation. Its premier product, the BioKnowledge Library, set the industry standard for proteomic databases. Dr. Garrels pioneered the field of computer-assisted scientific curation and developed key information processing technologies used in this effort. In 2000, Proteome, Inc. was acquired by Incyte Genomics, Inc. of Palo Alto, CA. From 1978 to 1995, Dr. Garrels was Director of the QUEST Protein Database Center at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY, where he pioneered new methods for large-scale protein separation and analysis. The protein separation methods and analytical software developed by Dr. Garrels were the core technologies of Protein Databases, Inc., a protein separation and analysis company later acquired by BioRad, Inc. Dr. Garrels has numerous scientific publications and presentations in the fields of proteomics and genomic information analysis.
Dr. Garrels received his BS in Biology and Physics from the California Institute of Technology and his PhD in Biology from the University of California, San Diego.

Joan E. Brooks, PhD
Chief Operating Officer
Prior to Garbrook, Dr. Brooks, along with Dr. James Garrels, were founders of Proteome, Inc., a successful knowledge company that provided comprehensive annotation for newly sequenced genomes, including the human genome. Proteome was a leader and innovator in the field of scientific curation. Its premier product, the BioKnowledge Library, set the industry standard for proteomic databases. Dr. Brooks was responsible for initiatives covering business development, intellectual property, and academic relationships. In 2000, Proteome, Inc. was acquired by Incyte Genomics, Inc. of Palo Alto, CA. From 1984 to 1998, Dr. Brooks was a Senior Scientist at New England Biolabs, Inc., Beverly, MA, where she invented several key bacterial cloning strategies, resulting in five patent awards. Dr. Brooks has numerous scientific publications and presentations in the fields of genomic information analysis and bacterial gene cloning, expression, and regulation.
Dr. Brooks received her BS in Biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and her MS and PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Rochester. She did post-doctoral research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY.

Kelley L. Lennon-Hopkins, DSc
Director, Product Development
Dr. Lennon-Hopkins joined Garbrook Knowledge Resources in February 2007 from Biobase Corporation, Beverly, MA where she held the position of Manager, Marketing Communications and Customer Support. She was responsible for supporting key accounts, demonstrating database products to existing and potential customers, and providing scientific support for sales presentations. In addition, she wrote or edited customer communications, including press releases, user documentation, and company presentations. From 2000-2006, Dr. Lennon-Hopkins held the position of Editor of Proteome Databases at Proteome, Inc., continuing in this capacity after Incyte Genomics, Palo Alto, CA acquired the company. As an Editor, Dr. Lennon-Hopkins was responsible for database content and accuracy, as well as for training and managing teams of curators. She played key roles in developing new projects and new Proteome Database products, including database modules pertaining to protein expression, human disease, and protein-protein interactions.
Dr. Lennon-Hopkins received her BA in Biology from Connecticut College and her DSc in Oral Biology from Boston University’s Goldman School of Dental Medicine. She did post-doctoral research at Boston University. She has presented at numerous international conferences and is well published in the field of glycobiology.

Daniela Sciaky, PhD
Principal Curator
Dr. Sciaky joined Garbrook Knowledge Resources in September 2006. From 2000-2006, she held the position of Scientific Curator of Proteome Databases at Proteome, Inc., continuing in this capacity after the company was acquired by Incyte Genomics, Palo Alto, CA and later with Biobase Corporation, Beverly, MA. As Scientific Curator, Dr. Sciaky was responsible for curating scientific literature on a wide variety of topics, developing key content for the Proteome Databases, and maintaining quality control. She was actively involved in several early test curation efforts, including a project that developed a proprietary method for predicting functions for previously uncharacterized proteins. Prior to joining Proteome, she held positions as Research Scientist with Children's Hospital of Cincinnati and Albany Medical College. From 1977 to 1992, Dr. Sciaky served as an Associate Geneticist at Brookhaven National Laboratory and as an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati. She has served as a peer reviewer for the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Agriculture, and the US Department of Energy. In addition, she has reviewed scientific papers for Bio/Technology, The Plant Cell, Nucleic Acids Research, Plasmid, BioScience, Biochemistry, and Planta journals.
Dr. Sciaky received her BS in Biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and her MS and PhD in Genetics from Washington State University. She did post-doctoral research at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY. She has presented at numerous scientific conferences and is well published in several scientific fields, including plant disease and natural systems.
