James Garrels, CEO

James I. Garrels, PhD

Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Garrels is CEO and cofounder of Garbrook Knowledge Resources, Inc. Garbrook was formed in 2005 to provide a one-stop source for scientific, technical, business and economic knowledge about issues of major societal importance.

Prior to Garbrook, Dr. Garrels was a founder and CEO of Proteome, Inc., a successful knowledge company that provided comprehensive annotation for newly sequenced genomes, including the human genome. Proteome was a leader and innovator in the field of scientific curation. Its premier product, the BioKnowledge Library, set the industry standard for proteomic databases. Dr. Garrels pioneered the field of computer-assisted scientific curation and developed key information processing technologies used in this effort. In 2000, Proteome, Inc. was acquired by Incyte Genomics, Inc. of Palo Alto, CA. From 1978 to 1995, Dr. Garrels was Director of the QUEST Protein Database Center at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY, where he pioneered new methods for large-scale protein separation and analysis. The protein separation methods and analytical software developed by Dr. Garrels were the core technologies of Protein Databases, Inc., a protein separation and analysis company later acquired by BioRad, Inc. Dr. Garrels has numerous scientific publications and presentations in the fields of proteomics and genomic information analysis.

Dr. Garrels received his BS in Biology and Physics from California Institute of Technology and his PhD in Biology from University of California, San Diego.


Joan Brooks, COO

Chief Operating Officer

Dr. Brooks is COO and cofounder of Garbrook Knowledge Resources, Inc. Garbrook was formed in 2005 to provide a one-stop source for scientific, technical, business and economic knowledge on issues of major societal importance.

Prior to Garbrook, Dr. Brooks, along with Dr. James Garrels, were founders of Proteome, Inc., a successful knowledge company that provided comprehensive annotation for newly sequenced genomes, including the human genome. Proteome was a leader and innovator in the field of scientific curation. Its premier product, the BioKnowledge Library, set the industry standard for proteomic databases. Dr. Brooks was responsible for initiatives covering business development, intellectual property, and academic relationships. In 2000, Proteome, Inc. was acquired by Incyte Genomics, Inc. of Palo Alto, CA. From 1984 to 1998, Dr. Brooks was a Senior Scientist at New England Biolabs, Inc., Beverly, MA, where she invented several key bacterial cloning strategies, resulting in five patent awards. Dr. Brooks has numerous scientific publications and presentations in the fields of genomic information analysis and bacterial gene cloning, expression, and regulation.

Dr. Brooks received her BS in Biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and her MS and PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Rochester. She did post-doctoral research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY.


Bill Bardosh, VP

William C. Bardosh, MBA

Vice-President, Commercial Development

Mr. Bardosh has over 25 years experience in management, business/alliance development, technology assessment, sales, marketing, and research in global and leading biotechnology and biopharmaceutical organizations. Over the last few years, Mr. Bardosh has been involved extensively in the Renewable Energy industry as consultant to a number of emerging and global firms.

Prior to joining Garbrook, Mr. Bardosh’s career tenure included Associate General Manager at The Jackson Laboratory, Business Development Executive with IBM Life Sciences, VP Corporate Development at Nova Molecular Inc., Director Business Development for DSM Biologics, and Country Manager at Applied Biosystems/Perkin Elmer Inc.

Mr. Bardosh attended Concordia University for his BSc in Cell and Molecular Biology and MSc studies focused on yeast expression and gene regulation. He also holds an Executive MBA from the John Molson School of Business, with emphasis on Alliances and Technology Partnerships in the Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutical Industry.


Amy Hodge, Director

Amy E. Hodge, PhD

Director, Curation Research

Dr. Hodge is the Director of Curation Research at Garbrook Knowledge Resources, having joined the company in February 2007. She is responsible for investigating and assessing new database projects as well as developing technology-based methods for enhancing our existing databases.

Prior to Garbrook, Dr. Hodge was Editor of Proteome Databases at Proteome, Inc., and continued in this capacity when the company was sold to Incyte Genomics of Palo Alto, CA, and later to Biobase Corporation, of Beverly, MA. Dr. Hodge was responsible for database content and accuracy, as well as training of new employees in India for Biobase. Dr. Hodge has also worked for the Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics Knowledge Base (PharmGKB) at Stanford University and taught Microbiology for Georgetown College of Georgetown, KY.

Dr. Hodge received her BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Centre College of Kentucky, and her MPhil and PhD in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics from Yale University.


Kelley Lennon-Hopkins, Director

Director, Product Development

Dr. Lennon-Hopkins is Director of Product Development at Garbrook Knowledge Resources, having joined the company in February 2007. Dr. Lennon-Hopkins is responsible for defining and developing the Garbrook Knowledge Products, based on market feedback and customer needs.

Prior to Garbrook, Dr. Lennon-Hopkins was Manager of Marketing Communications & Customer Support at Biobase Corporation, of Beverly, MA. From 2000-2006, Dr. Lennon-Hopkins was Scientific Editor of Proteome Databases at Proteome, Inc., continuing in this capacity when the company was sold to Incyte Genomics of Palo Alto, CA. As a Scientific Editor, Dr. Lennon-Hopkins was responsible for database content and accuracy, as well as for developing new projects.

Dr. Lennon-Hopkins received her BA in Biology from Connecticut College and her DSc in Oral Biology from Boston University’s Goldman School of Dental Medicine. She did post-doctoral research at Boston University.


Susan Mockus, Director

Susan M. Mockus, PhD

Director, Curation

Dr. Mockus joined Garbrook Knowledge Resources in February of 2007 and is the Director of Curation. Her primary responsibility is to oversee content and curator management for numerous renewable energy projects.

Prior to Garbrook Knowledge Resources she was a Product Manager at the Proteome subsidiary of Biobase Corporation of Beverly, MA. Dr. Mockus has spent seven years in the area of bioinformatics annotation, beginning with Proteome, Inc. in 2000 and continuing as an Editor during Proteome’s ownership by Incyte Genomics of Palo Alto, CA. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Roger Williams University and the Community College of Rhode Island.

Dr. Mockus received her BS in Biotechnology from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and her PhD in Neuroscience from Wake Forest University. She did postdoctoral research at the University of Washington, Seattle.


Daniela Sciaky, Director

Principal Curator

Dr. Sciaky is Principal Curator at Garbrook Knowledge Resources, having joined the company in September 2006. She is a content expert for Garbook and is responsible for driving the expansion of Garbrook Knowledge Products and pioneering new curation projects. Dr. Sciaky’s extensive expertise in various curation topics makes her the “go to person” for preparing presentations and demonstrations of the Garbrook Knowledge Products.

Prior to joining Garbrook, Dr. Sciaky was Scientific Curator of Proteome Databases at Proteome, Inc., continuing in this capacity when the company was sold to Incyte Genomics of Palo Alto, CA and later to Biobase Corporation of Beverly, MA. As Scientific Curator, Dr. Sciaky was responsible for curating the scientific literature to add key content to the Proteome Databases. Prior to joining Proteome, she worked as a Research Scientist at Children's Hospital of Cincinnati and at Albany Medical College. From 1977 to 1992, Dr. Sciaky served as an Associate Geneticist at Brookhaven National Laboratory and an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati.

Dr. Sciaky received her BS in Biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and her MS and PhD in Genetics from Washington State University. She did post-doctoral research at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY.
