The Garbrook Process

The Garbrook Knowledge Processing System is a unique approach to knowledge organization, combining both human expertise and proprietary information technology. Originally developed to annotate the Human Genome, our proven capability enables us to combine highly disparate information from a full range of relevant sources into a comprehensive and concise knowledge base of uniform style and depth that is a powerful resource for generating critical new insight.

Our process begins with the capture and selection of tens of thousands of source documents

and information feeds including scientific publications, reports and studies from government and non-profit organizations, trade media, legal and business news, press releases, regulatory information, general media, etc. We then supplement this information with background knowledge that, with our proven process and experience, allows us to automatically rate sources by quality and helps select the most relevant documents from vast amounts of redundant and often irrelevant available material.

Source Processing

We “preprocess” each document into their major sections and “fractionate” these sections by topic. A further filtration step removes sections that are off-topic, of an inappropriate level (too basic or too technical), or simply redundant. This process prepares the information stream for the next critical curation step.

Information Conversion

The key step, unique to Garbrook, is where our curators break source material down to individual facts. Captured as bullet points, each fact remains linked to its original source(s). Facts are then distilled to bring relevant items together and much information that is erroneous, opinionated or simply filler is removed. We estimate total reduction in volume of over 100-fold relative to the original source material from that which enters our system.

Output Structuring

In the final step, which is our core differentiator, lines of information are “condensed” into digital pages of our Knowledge Resource. Each digital page presents comprehensive information on a single topic or subtopic in a concise style, with uniform depth and structure. Pages are extensively cross-linked and indexed for ease of navigation, and the entire Resource is fully searchable.
